Original Civil War U.S. Marked Cavalry Horse Bit Recovered At Antietam Certified. Original model 1859 Cavalry horse bit made of iron with brass U.S. markings on each side. This “S” Curve Bit, was The standard issue bit, for general use with a bradoon. The curved shank made it harder for a horse to grab the side of the bit. With a higher port and the weight of this bit, it would encourage a horse to submit to the rider. Complete Cavalry bit has the U.S. insignia on side. The bit shows the brass coloring on the U.S. marking . The outside dimensions of this bit measures 5 7/8″x9.5″. Has an excellent even dark patina and very mild pitting. Recovered just outside Antietam, MD. in excellent early pick up condition. . US bits this nice are very difficult to find and only come from old collections.
