Blood letting was a medical practice used through out the 18th and most of the 19th centuries. It was thought that eliminating some of the diseased or bad blood would help to quicken the healing process. Most devices resembled small pocket knives and were known as fleams. They were used to make small and efficient cuts on the body or even intentionally cutting into a vain to cause bleeding. The bad blood was caught in little bowls designed especially for the purpose and then the collected blood was discarded as waste.
