    Original Civil War Period Blood Letting Fleam With Case Certified By The Gettysburg Museum Of History. Blood letting was a medical practice used through out the 18th and most of the 19th centuries. It was thought that eliminating some of the diseased or bad blood would help to quicken the healing process. Most devices resembled small pocket knives and were known as fleams. They were used to make small and efficient cuts on the body or even intentionally cutting into a vain to cause bleeding. The bad blood was caught in little bowls designed especially for the purpose and then the collected blood was discarded as waste. A 19th century spring loaded brass and steel Fleam, with it's original leather maker marked case. In good condition. Sheridan leads a cavalry raid in the direction of Gordonsville that is repulsed at the Battle of Trevilian Station.  With old digger tag on back (see photos). Has some pitting and dents (see photos). Has a thin layer of lacquer allied by the digger to prevent rust. This was recovered at the Ricmond battlefield on what was then private property (not National Park land). There is no numbers so it is impossible to accurately date this one. It is a standard  version with plane  wood grips and and scrolled frame.   This gun's spring is tight and  it  does work and does fire.  the grips are worn but nice.   The gun  is about .36  caliber.  Allen And Wheellock also made the famous "Pepperbox" that had a similar top hammer. 1847 was the patent date on this pistol but it was made for years into the Civil War period. This British-made accouterment is an original saber-sword bayonet made for the Enfield .577 caliber musket longarm. The bayonet, with its Yataghan-style blade measures 28” long and has a single 15” fuller on each flat.   Blade has various markings on both ricassos.  Blade bears a good semi-bright finish with scattered speckles of light peppery pitting overall. Grips are wood in good condition with some cracks (see photos).     Very Rare Civil War Period Diplomats Sword 1850-1865 Certified By The Gettysburg Museum Of History. This is a very rare American Diplomat sword from 1850 to 1865. Sword with a Federal Eagle on the clam shell guard with arrow bolts. The top has a lightning bug design (very unusual). The 3 edged blade has gold decorative motif . Now we know Tiffany bought blades from this German maker and hilted them here in America. Normally I would think this is just a normal German made sword but the Federal Eagle on the Shell is American. It came from an old collection.
