    Very Rare Civil War Explosive Bullet Relic In Excellent Condition Certified By The Gettysburg Museum Of History

    Very Rare Civil War Explosive Bullet Relic in excellent condition.  One of the rarest and most desirable Civil War bullets the Gardner Explosive .58 caliber bullet.The bullet was cast around a copper bottle shaped insert with hole at bottom. It was filled with fine grain powder. When rifle was fired, the fuse ignited and caused explosion about 1- 1/4 seconds after firingMost Gardner explosive rounds were dug around Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. The recovery location on this one was not recorded.  They were unpopular with soldiers, they were thought of as being "unfair" or "barbaric". They were also feared by some when rumors circulated that a solider's cartridge box exploded after being struck while carrying "Explosive Bullets". When bullets strike living trees the tree continues to grow around the bullet like this one has.     Original Civil War Shoulder Scales Early Pickup From The Belle Plains Area Certified By The Gettysburg Museum Of History. Shoulder scales were used mostly by Cavalry, Artillery, and Heavy Artillery. In excellent "early pickup condition. One of the two uniform mounts are still intact. Recovered from the Belle Plains, Virginia (sometimes spelled as Belle Plain) area was a steamboat landing and unincorporated settlement on the south bank of Potomac Creek off the Potomac River, in Stafford County, Virginia. In the early 19th-century, Belle Plains served as landing for steamboats to Washington, D.C. The landing and its hotel were in turn was serviced by stagecoaches running to and from nearby Fredericksburg, Virginia where passengers would connect with the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad.  Bell Plains and Potomac Creek fell by the wayside when the railroad bypassed them, reaching Aquia Landing on Aquia Creek as its terminus wharf in 1842.Belle Plains again rose to prominence during the American Civil War, where it was used as an alternate supply point to Aquia Landing by the Union Army of the Potomac. These were issued to the very early Maine Volunteers and were replaced later with standard U.S. plates. The older Vet's coveted these plates and wore them throughout the Civil War. This is excavated (dug) plate with a deep green patina and some loss due to a shovel strike by the digger. Both hooks are gone. This plate was very difficult to photograph due to the deep patina. It look much better in person. The recovery location is unknown but is most likely Virginia.
