They had practical as well as patriotic uses, such as marking positions to keep them safe from friendly aircraft while advancing. original larger style wool example is 43″ x 68″ An approximately 22″ diameter red “Himaru”  to the center of the flag’s white field. We placed a helmet on it for size reference.
