    SOLD Very Rare VMM Volunteer Maine Militia Full Size Excavated Cartridge Box Plate. A scarce and very desirable Civil War 1861 Maine state box plate. These were issued to the very early Maine Volunteers and were replaced later with standard U.S. plates. The older Vet's coveted these plates and wore them throughout the Civil War. This is excavated (dug) plate with a deep green patina and some loss due to a shovel strike by the digger. Both hooks are gone. This plate was very difficult to photograph due to the deep patina. It look much better in person. The recovery location is unknown but is most likely Virginia.     Confederate “WishBone” Belt And Buckle From The Battle Of Gettysburg William Ziegler Collection

    Confederate "WishBone" Belt And Buckle From The Battle Of Gettysburg William Ziegler Collection. A Civil War black leather belt with Confederate altered buckle made from a U.S. "puppy paw" buckle with it's face taken off making a "wishbone" buckle. It was common practice for Confederate troop to use captured Yankee equipment and altered items. This is a very early Gettysburg battlefield pick-up from the William Ziegler collection. Ziegler was a Civil War Veteran and picked up many items from locals very early. He had a livery service in Gettysburg and his business partner was an early battlefield guide.     Magnificent Confederate Belt Buckle With Old Ink Tag Recovered By Legendary Relic Hunter And Author Bill Gavin. Found by the man who literally wrote the book on belt buckles. An earlier recovered Confederate roller belt buckle in relic condition, the tongue still moves! This buckle was found at Spotslyvania Court House at General Ewell's line. It has a great old ink tag written by Bill Gavin. Gavin started hunting with early metal detectors in the 1940's. He is considered the founding father of Civil War relic hunting with metal detectors. Gavin wrote the first Civil War Belt buckle guide book in the early 1960's (see photos). Many Confederates wore roller buckles (see the period photos of Confederates wearing the is type of buckle. Collectors appreciate old ink tags and this makes this relic very desirable.     Authentic U.S. "Puppy Paw" Belt Plate Recovered At East Cavalry Field Gettysburg Battlefield.  Very nice early pick up (Pre-National Park) with all  hooks. The plate has some edge loss and  has a very nice chocolate brown  and slightly green patina . This plate was found at the East Cavalry Field  that saw fiece fighting on July 3rd  1863. This is the area where General Custer fought Confederate General JEB Stuart. Most U.S. Cavalry used eagle sword plates so this could very well be a Confederate used plate worn upside down.  A very historic area and a remarkable box plate. Relics from this area rarely come up for sale. Comes with a deaccession letter from the Gettysburg Museum of History documenting the provenance of this artifact.
