Original Civil War Period Blood Letting Fleam With Case Certified By The Gettysburg Museum Of History. Blood letting was a medical practice used through out the 18th and most of the 19th centuries. It was thought that eliminating some of the diseased or bad blood would help to quicken the healing process.
Most devices resembled small pocket knives and were known as fleams. They were used to make small and efficient cuts on the body or even intentionally cutting into a vain to cause bleeding. The bad blood was caught in little bowls designed especially for the purpose and then the collected blood was discarded as waste. A 19th century spring loaded brass and steel Fleam, with it's original leather maker marked case. In good condition. Sword with a Federal Eagle on the clam shell guard with arrow bolts. The top has a lightning bug design (very unusual). The 3 edged blade has gold decorative motif . Now we know Tiffany bought blades from this German maker and hilted them here in America. Normally I would think this is just a normal German made sword but the Federal Eagle on the Shell is American. It came from an old collection. The sword is great condition, no scabbard. A specialty round of the Civil War, Williams cleaner bullets were to be fired about every 10 rounds and the plate on the back had a washer that would physically scrape the barrel after being fired. The idea was to lessen residue caused by black gun powder in a rifle barrel during heavy use. Recovered at Cedar Creek battlefield in Virginia). This bullet was recovered about 50-60 years ago on what was then private property. Magnificent Confederate Belt Buckle With Old Ink Tag Recovered By Legendary Relic Hunter And Author Bill Gavin. Found by the man who literally wrote the book on belt buckles. An earlier recovered Confederate roller belt buckle in relic condition, the tongue still moves! This buckle was found at Spotslyvania Court House at General Ewell's line. It has a great old ink tag written by Bill Gavin. Gavin started hunting with early metal detectors in the 1940's. He is considered the founding father of Civil War relic hunting with metal detectors. Gavin wrote the first Civil War Belt buckle guide book in the early 1960's (see photos). Many Confederates wore roller buckles (see the period photos of Confederates wearing the is type of buckle. Collectors appreciate old ink tags and this makes this relic very desirable. A rare opportunity to own an authentic Confederate belt buckle with provenance from the original finder.
