Original Civil War Heart Shaped Martingale Plate Recovered At Brandy Station, Virginia Certified By The Gettysburg Museum Of History.  Civil War  heart-shaped plate worn on the center of the martingale on the horse’s chest. The plate measures about 3” by 2 ¾” and is constructed of lead  and was affixed to the martingale with  iron rivets. The plate has a dark brown patina and a few bends and chips along the edge. Excavated at Brandy Station, Virginia. A nice example of a seldom encountered Civil War plate. Recovered at Brandy Station, Virginia in the area where  Cavalry action was.
