Matin Bormann (1900 – 1945) One of Hitler’s closest confidants and his personal secretary after 1943, he remained in the bunker with Hitler until his leader’s death, likely killed attempting to escape the Fuhrerbunker. BORMANN, MARTIN. Nazi official, private secretary to Adolf Hitler. Letter Signed as Secretary to the Fuhrer and Reichsleiter, in German, 1 page 4to on his official letterhead, Munich, Fuhrer Headquarters, July 26, 1944, to Treasurer of the Reich Franz Xaver Schwarz. On behalf of Adolf Hitler, Bormann offers Schwarz thanks for a letter which he wrote to the Fuhrer, at the same time conveying wishes for a speedy recovery from the Fuhrer and from himself. Schwarz, a longtime Party stalwart, was also a Reichsleiter and an SS-Obergruppenfuhrer (General). The title “Reichsleiter” was first applied to Hitler as leader of the Third Reich, and later to Bormann as his designated successor; it also was used for certain high officials, such as Schwarz.
