Outstanding RARE Original WWII U.S. 101st Airborne 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia DUI Certified By The Gettysburg Museum Of History. The 506th PIR. The official distinctive unit insignia (DUI) or coat of arms for the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) was officially approved on April 20, 1943, though the unit also famously embraced an unofficial pocket patch known as the “Para-Dice” design. The Official Insignia Design & Symbolism The Shield: Features a blue background (representing infantry) split by a diagonal silver lightning flash, symbolizing the unit’s speed, power, and capability to strike by surprise from the sky. Six Parachutes: Displayed in chief (the upper portion of the shield), representing the fact that the 506th was the sixth parachute regiment activated in the United States Army. The Motto Scroll: Placed at the base with the word “CURRAHEE”, a Cherokee word meaning “Stand Alone”. This was the legendary rallying cry of the regiment, originating from the grueling mountain they ran daily during initial training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia. This is a WWII period 506 PIR DUI that was made in 1945 during the occupation while the 101st was in Austria. These are said to have been made by an Austrian company. These are the type that are most seen in Veteran’s grouping.
